An Interview with the King about his 40 years as the Head of State of Sweden
One late afternoon in late January the King sits in his office at the Royal Palace, and looks back on years as regent. In 2013, the King will have been the head of state for 40 years, and the planning for the anniversary have been going on for several months.
King Gustaf VI Adolf, King’s grandfather, died on 15 September 1973. Four days later, Carl XVI Gustaf made a speech from the throne in Rikssalen in the Royal Palace and became Sweden’s new head of state. After the speech in Rikssalen King Carl XVI Gustaf met the people on the balcony at Lejonbacken.
